Invisalign® Q & A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of removable, custom-made aligner trays that fit tightly over your teeth. The clear aligners shift your teeth gradually until your teeth move into the desired position. As an alternative to traditional metal braces, Invisalign is less noticeable and more comfortable to wear. Teens and adults like the versatility and convenience of this type of orthodontics because they can often achieve the desired results in less time.
How does the Invisalign process work?
At your first consultation, Dr. Shine and the Tria Dental Tysons team explain the simple Invisalign process and answer all your questions. Since many of the dental team members have firsthand experience with Invisalign, they can tell you about wearing the trays and their own results. You can also expect:
- A mouth soft tissue oral exam and cancer screening
- Dental X-rays
- Discussion of your expectations and desired treatment results
- a about the length of the process
- Explanation of how the aligners work
Based on your individual needs, Dr. Shine creates a customized treatment plan that shows exactly how your teeth are expected to move and adjust with the Invisalign system. Once you have your aligners, you wear them 20-22 hours each day. You can remove them to eat and brush your teeth, or even for special occasions. Everyone is different, but most of the time, the entire process lasts about 13 months.
What types of problems can Invisalign correct?
Invisalign can correct a variety of teeth straightening problems, from slight to more serious crowding. Dr. Shine has the expertise to evaluate your specific condition and tell you if the Invisalign system is the best choice for straightening your teeth. Some common concerns that respond well to this system include:
- Gaps caused by missing teeth or abnormal growth of the jawbone
- Overbites, where upper teeth bite over lower teeth
- Underbites, where lower teeth protrude past the upper front teeth
- Open bite, where upper and lower teeth do not make proper contact
- Crowded teeth that occur from lack of space in your mouth
- Crossbite, where upper and lower jaws do not align properly
If left uncorrected, all of these issues can contribute to poor oral health as a result of excess gum exposure, excessive plaque accumulation, and even tooth decay. If you would like to know if you are a good candidate for Invisalign, call Tria Dental Tysons or schedule a consultation online.
